How I have used Yoshukai to develop my character.

My training and involvement in Yoshukai Karate has influenced my character greatly. It has helped me realize the responsibility I must take upon myself. I have become more patient. I have more respect for others and myself, and I am truly honored to be a part of Yoshukai Alliance.

First, Yoshukai has helped me understand the responsibility that I must show to others. In and out of class, I must be responsible and keep myself under control. Not only is self-control important during Kumite, it is important in every life. Becoming a Black Belt requires a lot of responsibility. I must be a good example for others in and out of the Dojo. I do not fear taking on further responsibilities because of my training.

Patience is a virtue. Having to wait for a year before testing for my Black Belt has helped me learn to be patient. In my profession, a person needs a lot of patience and Yoshukai has helped. When my three-year-old son does not want to follow direction, I think about my training and that I need to be patient with him. When I am training and having trouble extending my front-kick, I do not get frustrated. I have learned to be patient, practice and do the best I can.

Yoshukai has helped me respect others and myself and I feel honored to be a part of this style of martial arts. In my “early years” in Yoshukai, I was taught how to respect the higher ranks in class. This has helped me in my profession by being respectful towards my employer and the students and parents that I deal with daily. I am also honored to be a part of Yoshukai Alliance. I am proud of my accomplishments and I walk with pride knowing the capabilities that have been instilled in me. I will wear the Black Belt with honor and pride.

I am a better person because of my training and involvement in Yoshukai Karate. I feel that it is important to represent your style properly and show others how the training has influenced me in a positive manner. The lessons learned in the Dojo will stay with me forever.

How has karate, specifically Yoshukai, helped you in your life?

Yoshukai Karate has helped me in my life in many, many ways. To start with, it has helped me to realize that I do not have to be a victim in all circumstances of life: that I can and need to stand up for myself. Karate has given me that courage! It has given me the confidence I have always needed; in order to have prevented a lot of bad experiences. I can now look into my life and know that I WILL NOT be a victim anymore. Yoshukai has given me the mental strength to look danger in the eye and say, ‘No, not anymore’.

Second of all, Yoshukai has given me the ability to look closer at my life and to have the courage to stand up and make important changes in my life. Karate has given me enough confidence to believe in myself and any decisions I may make in the future. I’ve
